🎉 K–5 End-of-the-Year Tips: Celebrate Growth, Maintain Momentum, and Prep for Summer Success

The final weeks of the school year are filled with excitement, emotion, and sometimes a bit of chaos—especially for families with younger learners. Whether your child is wrapping up their first year of school or heading into upper elementary grades, the end of the year is a valuable time for reflection, celebration, and preparation for summer learning.

At Excel, we know that a strong finish leads to a confident start. Here are our top end-of-the-year tips for K–5 students—plus summer resources to keep young minds active and engaged.

âś… 1. Celebrate Achievements (Big and Small)

Before shifting into summer mode, take time to recognize your child’s growth this year. That could mean academic progress, improved social skills, or personal milestones like reading a full chapter book or making a new friend.

Try This at Home:

  • Create a “Year in Review” scrapbook with your child.

  • Write letters to their teacher or classmates reflecting on favorite memories.

  • Make a “Proud of You” poster to hang up at home.

🎨 Bonus Idea: Include some of your child’s artwork or writing samples to visually show how far they’ve come.

🧹 2. Organize & Declutter the School Year

Clearing out backpacks, folders, and desks can be a satisfying way to close out the school year. Involve your child in the process to help them take ownership and reflect on their accomplishments.

Try This at Home:

  • Save a few standout projects or tests as keepsakes.

  • Recycle or donate gently used supplies.

  • Make space at home for summer reading or enrichment work.

📚 3. Build a Summer Reading Plan

Reading regularly during the summer is one of the best ways to prevent academic slide, especially for K–5 students. Encourage your child to explore new genres, read aloud with family, or listen to audiobooks on road trips.

🖼️ 4. Reflect Creatively

Younger students benefit from visual learning and self-expression, especially as they process transitions. Try engaging your child in art, storytelling, or discussion to help them reflect on their school year and look ahead.

Try This at Home:

  • Draw a picture of a favorite school memory.

  • Create a “Summer Bucket List” together.

  • Ask: “What are you most excited for next year?”

🛌 5. Ease Into Summer Routines

Don’t wait until the last day of school to start shifting routines. Gradually adjust bedtimes, screen time, and daily rhythms to keep things smooth and manageable for your family.

Try This at Home:

  • Keep a loose but consistent summer routine (reading time, outdoor time, creative time).

  • Start a summer learning journal to track progress and goals.

  • Use countdown calendars for upcoming camps or vacations.

❤️ A Note to Parents: You Did It, Too!

The end of the school year is a milestone for your child—but it’s also one for you. Supporting your child through a year of growth, challenges, and change is no small feat. Take time to celebrate your role in their learning journey.
