July 4th – Independence Day – is not only a time for family, friends and fireworks, but also an opportunity to inspire your student and keep their spirit of learning engaged during summer break.

💦 Make a different kind of splash and dive into some American History 📜
- Discuss the significance of the Declaration of Independence and the values it represents. You can make a more interactive experience by reading excerpts out loud. Then have your student relate the passage to something in their own life or a current event.
- Put Founding Fathers’ names in a hat. Have your student pick one and do some research about that person and their contributions to the country’s history.
- Encourage students to take an in depth look at a specific historical event related to Independence Day and share their newfound knowledge with you.
🎇 Light the spark of Independence in Learning 📚
- Help your student set a summer goal for learning and help them as needed to set timelines, find appropriate resources and present their results.
- What’s your student’s passion? Help your student identify a topic or project that motivates them.
- Don’t forget to celebrate learning achievements, encouraging your student to continue moving forward with their goals and interests.
🇺🇸 The Freedom to have Fun with Learning 👧👦
- Create a set of writing prompt cards containing themes on independence, patriotism, and other concepts with meaning for the holiday. Have your student pick a card and embark on an engaging writing exercise such as composing a Haiku based on the prompt.
- Did you know that creative activities help solidify learning? Check your local craft store or go online to find fun ideas such as flag motif projects or a historical timeline poster.
- Take learning on the road IRL or virtually! Explore historical landmarks related to Independence Day through local onsite or viewing online resources and virtual tours.
- Enhance vocabulary and critical thinking skills with fun word searches and other games.
